My current work, consisting of works on paper and paper cutouts, investigates the folklore of Appalachia, the Ozarks, and the American South, with a focus on witch and ghost lore. I am particularly interested in the duality of the healer/witch figure. Using the “granny witch” of Appalachia as a springboard, I pull apart the many nuanced variations of this archetype and her relationship to history, culture, folklore, and broader concepts of femininity. My work considers how she is sometimes goodly, sometimes wicked, and often someplace in between. Also of interest are the traditional ghost stories of these regions and the concept of the “haint.” I am interested in the way fragments of these tales reside in memory, and I incorporate my own halfremembered pieces of narrative to form new, visual ones.
